What is a Dream?

What is a Dream?

An Excerpt from Worlds to Shatter, Shattered Worlds

The One

(Waving the Other aside.)   Tell me then, what is a dream?

DHGHOMYO

A thing both existent and non-existent.  A thing existing neither in quantity nor spatial continuity, existing perhaps, only in the mind of God.  (And this God cannot be quantified.)  You might even view dreams as a dihedral angle.

The Other

A dihedral angle!?  I would  prefer a book that makes men mad.

The One

Or a vector process?

DHGHOMYO

Rather, an undistributed middle.

The One

(Excitedly.)  A minor amusement of the gods?

The Other

A contradiction in terms; the unreality principle.

The One

An unfolding story; a traveller’s tale.

DHGHOMYO

The judgement of God.

The Other

Oblique obfuscations.

DHGHOMYO

The object of knowledge.

The One

A language independent of abstract entities; the primary function of understanding, expirations, intuitions.

DHGHOMYO

(With a knowing nod.)  Innate knowledge; The Secret of  Time;  the tomb of the muses.

The One

The subjunctive mood; the ablative case?

DHGHOMYO

A rising tide.

The Other

(Disparagingly.)   The null set.

The One

(Ignoring the Other.)  The whistle of an arrow!  The law of independent trials.  (This bewilders even himself.)  The state of the art; the coin of the realm.

DHGHOMYO

The driftings of the mind.
